Pennway's new Tipperary Terrier stud dog
1st JANUARY 2006
Pat , Roy & Rachel would like to wish all our diary page readers a very happy and prosperous 2006. Pat and I managed to see in the New Year but only just, Pat woke me as the 5 second countdown had started, then the fireworks started so that was the end of sleep for an hour. Rachel and Tony went to a fancy dress party so Rachel was a bit slow today. Spent the afternoon tidying up P.ROWAN who was supposed to be picked up by his new owner but they never arrived, hopefully they will be here tomorrow. Going to move a few ponies around tomorrow. We are moving P.PEREGRINE, P.QUAIL and L.REMBRANDT to Marsh Green and we will turn the 2 part bred fillies P.TAPDANCE and P.PORTRAIT out at Lydens for a couple of months. That will give Pat a chance to get the 2 yearling colts ready to show.

2nd JANUARY 2006
P.ROWAN has joined his new owners today and he left us looking really well. I hope we don't regret gelding and selling him when his first and only foal arrives out of L.PLUME late in March. Spent the rest of the day moving hay and straw but at least we are stocked up for a while.

4th JANUARY 2006
PEREGRINE,QUAIL & REMBRANDT have settled into Marsh Green really well so Pat has already upped their feed to get them ready for showtime. TAPDANCE & PORTRAIT love Lydens as they are able to spend all day outside.

7th JANUARY 2006
Today we have decided on our Stallion fee's for 2006. HEVER GOLF RANGER will stand at a fee of 300.00. P.PEREGRINE will be 150.00 to selected mares only and W.GRENEDIER will stand at 150.00 to any mares.

8th JANUARY2006
Above is photo of the last of the PEPSI-BLARNEY pups to leave home. He has
gone to join his older brother ARCHIE in New Market. That only leaves PEANUT and she is going to stay with us in the mean time.

14th JANUARY2006
Pennway have a brand new addition to our family. We picked up our new broodmare from the Butterworths and PADDOCK PENLLWYD by PADDOCK RIVERDANCE now belongs to Pat.
She is in foal to MOELVIEW CHARMER BOY and we feel very privileged to have been able to purchase this lovely mare. She will be mated with P.PEREGRINE this year.

28th JANUARY 2006
Not a lot to report at this time of the year but seeing mares getting heavier in foal adds a little excitement. Will we get a few fillies this year even one would be nice and with 6 mares showing well in foal we can only dream of what is to come. Our new mare P.PENLLWYD has settled in really well and we are looking forward to showing her with her foal at foot this year. P.PEREGRINE has matured nicely from 4 to 5 and we will get him out this year. Peanut our new terrier pup has well and truly got her legs under the table and she is giving us a lot of pleasure.

1st FEBRUARY 2006
Only 1 month of winter left to get through but already the day light hours are getting longer and buds are appearing on lots of shrubs in the hedgerows. Roll on spring!. Pedigree of our new mare P.PENLLWYD is on our Broodmare page but you will have to wait till the sun shines for a picture.

5th FEBRUARY 2006
Spent the weekend trimming feet and starting to get the ponies ready for showing. Rachel has B.MULBERRY looking very well and she will be ready for the early shows. L.REMBRANDT has come on a bundle and may still make the early shows. P.PEREGRINE'S coat is coming out in handfuls and will certainly be an early proposition. Broodmares are coming along nicely and are showing heavy in foal, and although there was some doubt earlier on L.AMETHYST she now looks like she may be in foal and if she is will be wonderful. Our grand daughter Megan was at the yard today and Pat let her ride PEREGRINE around his box and he took it all in his stride and showed what a wonderful temperament he has. P.JAZZ is our first mare due to foal on or about the 1st week in April. She is in foal to P.PEREGRINE.

8th FEBRUARY 2006
A few months ago I was contacted by a local lady to look at her new horse that she had just purchased and she was having problems with him. I found she had brought a failed racehorse from the sales and he was very very sharp. After months of trying to re-school him I was sure that this partnership was never going to work and I advised her to sell him and get herself something more suitable like a nice quiet cob. She was very much against that idea and wanted to keep trying with her thorobred. After many more bruised backsides and hurt pride she rang me again. I told her that I had a Welsh Cob that I would loan her to try but she didn't think she could possibly be seen out and about on a cob. A few more falls and a lot more napping and she rang me again to see if she could come and see my cob who we call Harry. She didn't say much when she saw him but after I talked her into trying him she decided to take him home for a few weeks to see how they got on. It worked out really well for her and her confidence started to build. She rang me yesterday to say that she had had the best days hunting in her whole life and felt so safe on Harry. Well that certainly is a compliment coming from someone who said they wouldn't be seen dead on a cob I said. "But he is a very fine cob and I like fine things" was her reply. Harry is registered as SHOREHAM HARRY and is a black 14.3hh Welsh Section D who was bred by Heather Raw and given to our Rachel as a foal.

11th FEBRUARY 2006
Received a photo yesterday from P.ROWAN'S new owners of them riding him around their yard. They are really pleased with him and said that he is taking it all in his stride and has broken in really well. They hope to show him within the next few weeks.

14th FEBRUARY 2006
We were able to confirm today what mares we have in foal. L.PLUME is in foal to P.ROWAN. L.COLUMBINE is in foal to C.CYMRO and P.JAZZ, L.CYGNET and P.COLLETTE are in foal to P.PEREGRINE. P.PENLLWYD is in foal to M.CHARMER BOY so that will give us 6 Section B foals to look forward to plus a 1/2 thorobred foal by H.G.RANGER out of Maria's lovely cob mare. It was really disappointing to find that L.AMETHYST was empty as is C.MARYROSE.

5th MARCH 2005
Spent today tidying up the ponies we are getting ready for the early shows. P.PEREGRINE. B.MULBERRY and L. REMBRANDT are coming along really well and will be ready to show in a couple of weeks

23rd MARCH 2006
At last the sun is starting to shine even though it is only 4 days from the official start of British summer time with the clocks going back next Sunday. We have entered both B.MULBERRY and L.REMBRANDT for the Towerlands Stallion Show next Sunday 26th and they are both on course to go although MULBERRY'S coat is not quite out but she needs to have a day out. Both ponies will then be prepared for the South of England Spring Show which starts at Ardingly on the 3rd of April

26th MARCH 2006
Pat and Rachel made the journey to Towerlands today with L.REMBRANDT and B.MULBERRY and Rachel had the job of showing them both as Pat had tweaked her hamstring on Saturday night while having a practice runout in the school. L.REMBRANDT was 3rd in the yearling colt class from 7 entries and the were thrilled with him as he is not really ready as he is still a bit on the leg. B.MULBERRY won the 2 yr old filly and gelding class so it was a good start to 2006. Both ponies will now go to Ardingly on the 3rd of April.

3rd APRIL 2006
We took the 2 ponies to South of England Spring Show today but with Pat and I suffering from a really bad flue we should have both been at home in bed. Rachel soldered on with great difficulty and we were pleased with the results under the circumstances. L.REMBRANDT was 2nd in the Sec B yearling class and B.MULBERRY
won the 2 and 3 yr old class so not a bad day.

10th APRIL 2006
We went to Newbury on Sunday to Southern Counties Welsh Spring Show. L.REMBRANDT continued his run of seconds when he finished in that place in the Sec B yearling class. B.MULBERRY maintained her unbeaten record when she won the 2 & 3 Sec B class. We will take them both to Eastern Welsh on Easter Monday. C.MARYROSE is in season so we covered her today with P.PEREGRINE.

17th APRIL 2006
Busy weekend as we took L.AMETHYST to Yorkshire to be mated with LAITHEHILL OBERON . Today we went to Eastern Counties Welsh Show with B.MULBERRY and L.REMBRANDT.  REMBRANDT was 2nd in a strong yearling colt class and MULBERRY was 3rd in the 2 & 3 yr old filly and gelding class so we were really pleased as the 2 above her were 3 yr olds.

22nd APRIL 2006
Rangers 1st foal for 2006 arrived today. A bay colt out of Maria's lovely grey Irish mare.
I bred this foal for Rachel hoping it would make a show hunter. Pat and Rachel want to call him Pennway Brandy-Snap.

23th APRIL 2006
P.JAZZ foaled last night and she has a very pretty grey filly by P.PEREGRINE. Rachel was very excited and gave up the chance to party so she could be there to see our first full home bred foal. JAZZ coped really well and the foal was soon on its feet and drinking. We will call her PENNWAY WREN.

1st MAY 2006
Took B.MULBERRY to Home Counties Spring Show today and she was 2nd in the 2 & 3yr old filly class. Once again she was beaten by a 3 yr old and we were really pleased with her. Got back and moved our 4 due to foal mares to Hilders onto good grass to finish them off before foaling. We covered P.JAZZ on her foaling heat with P.PEREGRINE today and also covered the DeQuincy's mare Erimus Show Girl with H.G.RANGER

6th MAY 2006
A really typie bay Sec D mare arrived today to go to H.G.RANGER and she was well in season so started covering her. The 4 mares we moved to Hilders last week are looking fabulous and P.COLLETTE is bagging up fast. Pat,Rachel & I went up to Maria's to see Shamus (P.BRANDY-SNAP) and he is coming on really well and seems very quiet.

10th MAY 2006
P.COLLETTE foaled through the night and she has a very smart grey colt by P.PEREGRINE. Pat was a little disappointed as she wanted a filly from her this year. We brought C.MARYROSE back to Marsh Green Stables today as she returned back in season and we covered her with P.PEREGRINE. We also brought P.CORONACH inside as we have people coming to look at him tomorrow and we hope they will buy him.

11th MAY 2006
We covered the Sec D mare this morning and her owners Andy and Kirsten picked her up and took her home. They will scan her at 16 days so fingers crossed. We took P.JAZZ and P.WREN to Hilders to be with P.COLLETTE and her foal and the 3 mares waiting to foal.

12th MAY 2006
Sarah Whitmore's mare PAARL RIVER foaled a lovely big strong bay filly by H.G.RANGER last night and she is thrilled with it.

14th MAY 2006
Last night John and Sally Bedford's Arab mare had a Chestnut(probably go grey) filly by RANGER. We picked up L.PLUME who had been away baby sitting for the winter and brought her back to Marsh Green and replaced her with C.MARYROSE. B.MULBERRY has gone back to Marsh Green and we have turned L.REMBRANDT and P.QUAIL out for a couple of months to mature. P.PEREGRINE has gone back to Lydens so he can be out on the grass 24/7 for a few weeks.

18th MAY 2006
Received some really sad news last night from John and Sally that their lovely Arab mare had to be put down after suffering a major colic attack.  Her lovely foal is now an orphan and hopefully they can find a foster mum for her. L.COLUMBINE produced a big chestnut filly last night by C.CYMRO

20th MAY 2006
John and Sally rang to say that the National Foaling Bank had managed to find them a possible foster mare for their orphaned foal by Ranger. They drove to Essex to pick up a mare who had foaled a dead foal overnight. The good news is that there was a instant bonding and their foal has a new mum.

23rd MAY 2006
Jane Williams rang this morning announcing the arrival of a very smart chestnut colt out of their HOYS mare SARAN WILD ROSE by RANGER. A nice leggy colt with lots of quality was how Jane described him.

25th MAY 2006
L.CYGNET had a grey colt foal last night by P.PEREGRINE. "Nice colt" said Pat and it might be a roan but my guess is it will go grey.

26th MAY 2006
We have decided on a few names for our 2006 foals. P.JAZZ'S filly will be called P.WREN, P.COLLETTE'S colt will be called P.KINGFISHER and L.COLUMBINES filly will be called P.CINNAMON. Rachel has called her RANGER colt P.BRANDY-SNAP. L.CYGNET'S colt will be called P.OSPREY

29th MAY 2006
Busy weekend for Pennway. On Saturday we made the short journey to Heathfield Show with P.PEREGRINE and then spent 3 hours waiting to be towed in to the showgrounds. What a mess with mud 2ft deep in the gateways and all the way to the lorry parks. Good show though and after winning the Sec B adult class we then went Champion and recieved the Welsh Best Of Breed rossette. We then waited patiently while the tractors got to us to tow us out. On Monday we set off early to take P.PEREGRINE to Surrey County Show. Much better organized with a steel road laid down and no problems getting on to the showgrounds. Although we only finished 2nd in the 4yr old and over class we then went on to be Res Sec B Champion so we had a brilliant weekend.

1st JUNE 2006
Hope had 4 puppies last night by Paddy. 3 black & tan dogs and 1 black & tan bitch.

3rd JUNE 2006
PADDOCK PENLLWYD foaled last night and presented us with a lovely bay filly. She has a lot of quality and size so Pat is over the moon.

5th JUNE 2006
Moved P.COLLETTE back to Marsh Green tonight and covered her with P.PEREGRINE. Hopefully this time it will be a filly.

6th JUNE 2006
Bob and Sylvia Barker brought their Jumbo mare to visit RANGER. She had a dead foal last year so hopefully we can get her in foal and it will be a successful live foaling.

7th JUNE 2006
We had a very excited Alex Kelly on the phone tonight telling us that her hack mare had delivered a stunning bay colt by RANGER

9th JUNE 2006
We took B.MULBERRY to South of England County Show today and she finished 2nd in the Sec B 2 and 3 yr old Colt ,Filly & Gelding class so we will now take her to East Anglia Native Show on Sunday with Plume to keep her company.

10th JUNE 2006.
We moved P.COLLETTE and P.JAZZ to Lydens with their foals and moved P.PENLLYWD to Marsh Green to be covered by P.PEREGRINE

11TH JUNE 2006
We loaded and set of really early for East Anglia Native Show but half way up the M11 disaster struck as we blew a head gasket in the 4x4. The AA got us off the motorway and with the help of some very dear friends managed to get everything back home safely.

12th JUNE 2006
Had a phone call from Jane Birch to tell us that their thorobred mare had produced a lovely filly by W.GRENEDIER. They think it is a roan but it may go grey. It is a "real stunner" she said and just what we ordered.

21st JUNE 2006
Pat has gone to Yorkshire for a week and hopes to go to Lincoln Show and will spend some time with her brother and his wife.

25th JUNE 2006
With Pat in Yorkshire and me agreeing to commentate for NPS Area 20 it left Rachel to take B.MULBERRY to Eastern Welsh and she hitched a ride with Ruth and Terry. They had a really good day as B.MULBERRY won the 2 & 3 yr old filly class and Ruth and Terry's yearling colt won and was reserve youngstock. They also won with their foal who then went on to be champion foal.

26th JUNE 2006
Rachel Gillam phoned to tell us that her Sec B mare Shannah had produced a filly foal by W.GRENEDIER last night and it was strong and healthy. Not sure what colour she said but it will probably go grey.

30th JUNE 2006
Ranger is really busy covering mares and he has had 6 in the last week and we are still getting enquiries.

1st JULY 2006
We took L.PLUME to the South Eastern Welsh Show today and she was placed 2nd in the Sec B adult class.

8th JULY 2006
Pat went to Northleach Welsh show with Ruth and Terry today as a spectator only as we will show next at Kent County.

15th JULY 2006
Took Plume and Mulberry to Kent County today and had a brilliant day. The classes were very strong with a large contingent from Wales there. LAITHEHILL PLUME was 2nd in the Stallion and Barren mare class and best mare which was a good result as she is just 4yrs old and BROOKHALL MULBERRY was 3rd in the 2 & 3 yr old colt, filly or gelding class and was best 2 yr old. We were really pleased with the result and as Rachel was at a friends wedding it was left to the old man to do the showing.

25th JULY 2006
Pat and Rachel made their annual pilgrimage to the Royal Welsh Show and took grandson CJ and B.MULBERRY with them. No luck on the showing front but they enjoyed their few days away.

4th AUGUST 2006

28th AUGUST 2006
We took P.PEREGRINE to Home Counties Medal Show today. He started off by winning the Section B Stallion class and then was Champion Section B and won the Welsh Medal. He then was judged Supreme Welsh Stallion. Pat and Rachel were really pleased.

2nd SEPTEMBER 2006
Pat and I took P.PEREGRINE to Three Shires Show in Milton Keynes today. He won the Section B Stallion class and then was Champion Section B and Medal winner. He is starting to come into his own now and has matured a lot. Pat may take him to Southern Counties tomorrow as it is the last breed show for 2006.

3rd SEPTEMBER 2006
Pat and Rachel decided to go to Southern Counties today and hitched a ride with Ruth
and Terry as I had ponies to move. They rang me mid morning really excited as PEREGRINE had gone Sec B Champion for the 3rd time in a week. What a brilliant end to our show season.

9th SEPTEMBER 2006
Pat and Ruth went to the Twyford sale for a look today. They said there were some nice youngsters but nothing they wanted to bring home. Rachel and I went to the Kelly's to pick up TAPDANCE. She has been mated to WESTACRE COMIC OPERA
but has proved to be very difficult to get in foal. Her last covering was 4 weeks ago and has not returned so fingers crossed. 9th OCTOBER 2006
I visited Rachel Mander today and was introduced to her Ranger foal and got a pleasant surprise. She is over the moon with him and will register him as a Welsh Partbred as the mare is 50% welsh. He will also be registered partbred Appaloosa.

12th OCTOBER 2006
Stumbled on to this. I bet it will make you smile. It made my day so hope it makes yours.

18th OCTOBER 2006

They are a nice bunch of foals and should go on to be successful show animals. We moved P.PEREGRINE to join W.GRENEDIER and L.REMBRANDT at Lydens were they will spend the winter.

21st NOVEMBER 2006
We sold P.WREN today and she is going to live very closeby as a friend and later on as a ridden pony for a 2 year old girl. We are sure this lovely filly will do us proud and keep the Pennway flag flying high.

24th NOVEMBER 2006
Ellie Thomas send this photo today of their little bitch pup by PADDY.  They are going to keep her.

18th DECEMBER 2006
Not a lot of news at this time of the year. All our 2006 foals have weaned really well and have all settled into the daily routine. We are really pleased with P.PEREGRINE's foals who all have super temperaments and are really nice little people. Mud every where and loads of water but the weather is still very mild. One can only wonder what is around the corner as it has to turn cold soon, its the shortest day in a week infact 3 days time. The sun will then be on its way back from down under.

21st DECEMBER 2006
At last the shortest day of the year and still only 2 frosts but loads of fog to contend with. Pat, Roy, Rachel and all our animal friends at Pennway would like to wish all our friends in the UK and around the world who read our Diary page a .....................
