20th January 2003
Show team coming along really well. 3 yearlings will be ready to show including P.Picasso who is with Ruth & Terry, P.Jazz a strong liver filly by Jitterbug, P.Tapdance our first attempt to breed a partbred by Jitterbug, P.Peregrine who is now 2 and P.Rowan also a 2 yr old by Lechlade Rosewood. These 5 are very forward and will be ready for the early spring shows. Broodmares have wintered really well and our first foal is only 5 weeks away.
1st February 2003
Snow everywhere but the mares are still doing really well. Best they have wintered for years. Hopefully the grass will start to grow as the day temperatures are steadily rising. Wont belong before we will see the first Wharley Grenedier foals as Poundy Madonna is due early March.
8th April 2003
Went to our first show for the year yesterday. It was the Spring Show at Ardingly. We took P.JUBILEE (C.Jitterbug--L.Columbine) who was 2nd in a strong class of yearlings and P.COLUMBUS (C.Jitterbug--L.Columbine) who won the 2 & 3 year old class. No foals as yet but we will keep you updated as they arrive. Spring is definitely here the sun is shining the birds are singing and the grass is growing.
10th May 2003
Took P.PEREGRINE to Eastern Welsh Spring and he finished 3rd in a strong class of 2 & 3 year olds and will improve with the outing. P.PICASSO has been slow to come to hand as a yearling but is nearly there. We took him to the PUK show at Newbury and he finished 2nd in the yearling class and we were pleased with the result and he will strip a much better colt next time out. Big excitement as Anne Brickles riding pony mare had a bay roan filly by W.GRENEDIER we are really thrilled with his first foal.
19th May 2003
Pat is over the moon. After expecting the worst i.e. no Sec B foals this year Laithehill Columbine has produced a fabulous filly by Farchynys Rhodrie a son of Cottrell Jitterbug. Pat has pushed the boat out and celebrated with a glass of champers.
9th June 2003
Covering season is well under way and we have started to finalize our 2003 mating's. COTTRELL MARYROSE who was empty in 2002 has been covered by P.PEREGRINE. L.CIGNET & POUNDY MADONNA have been covered by WHARELY GRENEDIER. P.COLLETTE has been covered by WESTACRE COMIC OPERA. L.COLUMBINE & L.AMYTHYST will be covered by F.RHODRIE
29th June 2003
Fabulous weekend for Pennway. We took P.COLUMBUS to the South East Show and after winning Champion Sec B went on to become Supreme Welsh gelding. Pat then went to Southern Counties Welsh Summer Show and P.PICASSO won the Sec B Yearling class then went on to be Champion Sec B Youngstock. Pat was over the moon with that result but that was only the start because he then went on to be Champion Sec B and also won the WPCS Medal. Huge excitement at Pennway so we celebrated with Ruth and Terry with a Chinese takeaway.
6th July
Took P.ROWAN to the Save the Children Show at Charing race course.
We have been very patient with this handsome son of LECHLADE ROSEWOOD and COTTRELL MARYROSE and he certainly attracted a lot of interest when we took him off the lorry but the whole occasion proved a bit much for him so we put him back on the lorry to wait for another day. We will take him to Kent County and we expect a huge result so watch this space.
13th July 2003
Went to Kent County Show yesterday and although we were disappointed with the result we were thrilled with the way P.ROWAN behaved himself. He was placed 5th out of 9 in the 2 & 3yr old Sec B class but was the highest placed 2 yr old and he did look a bit immature against the older ponies. He is just 2 as he was foaled at the end of June 2001, so he will improve with a bit more time. We have mated L.COLUMBINE with F.RHODRIE and will also cover L.AMETHYST with the same horse as we are thrilled with COLUMBINES 2003 filly by him. ''Probably the best foal we have breed'' according to Pat which is a big statement for her to make about any foal.
We are calling her P.ROSINA
July 20th 2003
We cant show at the Royal Welsh this year because Kathleen James is judging and she produced a filly for us earlier this year.We will be represented though as Ruth and Terry will be showing one of our breed in P.PICASSO who we leased to them at the beginning of the year so he will be flying the flag for us.
July 24th 2003
We were thrilled when P.PICASSO was placed 3rd in the yearling colt class at the Royal Welsh. He was shown by Ruth & Terry and is by their stallion Coed Coch Pele and has proved that even at 24 he is still capable of producing good progeny. His dam L.AMETHYST is also proving her worth as a broodmare as her 3 sons we have shown P.PELECAN,P.PEREGRINE and P.PICASSO have all gone Champion.
29th July 2003
Just arrived back from Ireland and we are thrilled with our foal out of P.PENNY(Beckside Little Toff----Minnie) by the Connamara stallion KING SMUFF. Penny lives in Ireland now as we have given her to Gillian Kyle but the filly foal we have called P.TRUFFLE will return to the UK and hopefully she will make a show hunter pony.
6th August 2003
It was Pat's birthday on the1st and I gave her a week in Dublin to go to the Dublin Horse Show which she described as something I have always wanted to do. After a 2 hour delay at Gatwick she arrived in Dublin and was picked up by Jonnie Kyle and taken back to Ballyvollan Stud to stay with Jonnie and Gillian and the Terriers.
10th August 2003
Pat arrived back from Dublin and I picked her up from Gatwick. She arrived back with a suitcase in one hand and a flask of chilled semen in the other
which she had brought back for a friend. Absolutely brilliant was her description of the RDS especially the Cobs which she described as the best she has ever seen. We then went to Ruth and Terry's and picked up L.Columbine and her foal and L.Amethyst and took them home. Columbine has been covered by F.Rhodrie but L.Amethyst did not come into season so we will try again next year.
24th August 2003
Our local show Edenbridge and Oxted and we had entered P.Peregrine which we knew was not the judges type but decided to take our chance. 7th out of 8 ponies and our worst result of the year but I guess that's showing. Undaunted we loaded him and his yearling brother back on the lorry the next day and headed for Home Counties Welsh Show and although the results were slightly better the best we could do was 2nd with both of them and wondered if our luck had deserted us. Perhaps we should try showing flowers or vegetables or----------------------------------------
30th August 2003
Ponies looked well so we decided to try our luck for the last time this showing year so we took P.Picasso and P.Peregrine to Three Shires Show at Milton Keynes as it was a Medal show. Ruth,Terry & Pat took the 2 boys
and bingo they got it right. P.Picasso won the Sec B yearling class and P.Peregrine won the 2 & 3 yr old class. Peregrine (woody) then went Champion Sec B and also won the WPCS medal. Peregrine then was Res Champion M & M. We then went back in under a different judge and were judged SUPREME OF SHOW. What a result, Pat is still smiling it was a great day for Pennway and for Section B's.
11th September 2003
Chris Willett has confirmed that he will take P.COLUMBUS as his 1st ridden M&M for next season(2004) and we are thrilled that Chris considers him good enough for Chloe to ride. They have already had success with P.COGNAC as a lead rein in 2001.
21st September 2003
Huge excitement at Pennway as Pepsi has whelped 5 pups by Blarney. 2 B&T and 1 tri bitches and 2 B&T dogs. These are very special pups
and we are already receiving confirmed orders for them.
27th September 2003
Pat and Rachel have been to Fayre Oaks Sale at Bluith Wells and are very excited about the prices of both Sec A & B ponies. Pat commented that the market is very strong for quality ponies and with 1 performance pony 5 yr old ORIELTON BEAMISH bringing £10,500.00 the future looks good.
11th October 2003
P.COLUMBUS has gone to Chris Willett and he reported back to tell us that he settled in really well and he would start on him immediately. Chris described him as the perfect little gentleman so lets hope all goes well. We are going to wean L.COLUMBINES foal this weekend and if she settles well we may look at a couple of foal shows. We have called her P.ROSINA and she is a well grown filly with a lot of scope and all looks well for F.RHODRIE as a successful stallion.
20th October 2003
Weaning of P.ROSINA has gone very well and she has settled and has continued to eat and thrive. We will look to taking her to a couple of shows this year so will get on with teaching her to lead and run out in hand. PAT is talking about going to Ireland to the Clifden Connamara sale this weekend then on to the crossroad sale on the following Tues. A long journey but it is sure to be an experience not to miss.
1st November 2003
Pat and Mandy made the journey to Connamara country and had a ball. They went by bus from Leeds to Holyhead and caught the ferry to Dublin. Jonnie picked them up from the ferry and took them to Ashford. They had a look around the ranch at Ballyvolan House and then borrowed a car from Jonnie and headed for Galway to watch the sun set over the bay. The next morning they made their way to Clifden to the sale. 500 lots going thru over 2 days so plenty to look at. Nice ponies brought lots of Euro's and the cheap ones were not worth bringing home. After the end of the second days sale they made their way to a B & B half way to Maams Cross which is were the the hill sale is held in the middle of the town and the whole town is closed off for the sale. They had to park the car 1 mile away and walk to the cross roads. Lots of horses and ponies for sale and they are negotiating on a yearling colt they described as stallion material. They drove back to Ashford on the Wed and caught the night ferry out of Dublin and Pat arrived back late Thurs afternoon. She described the trip as an experience of a lifetime.
3rd November 2003
First photo of Pepsi's new pups. This one will be living with Andrew and Sarah Hickman and she is a stunner. More photo's soon.
December 2003
Bad month for Pennway with the reported death of our son Ross in NZ so with put the month of December on hold. Lets hope 2004 is a better year.
Our team for next year looks promising. We have 2 yearlings Pennway Rosina by F.Rhodri out of L.Columbine and a colt with the Hensby's in Yorkshire. 3 2yr olds P.Jazz(C.Jitterbug--L.Cignet) P. Jubilee (C.Jitterbug---L.Columbine) and our partbred P.Tapdance (C.Jitterbug--Minnie). 3 3yr olds L.Plume a very typie filly that we have yet to show by Heaton Romeo P.Peregrine and P.Rowen. We also hope to show P.Collette who is due to foal to W.Comic
Opera. We would like to wish everyone a very Merry Xmas and a very successful 2004.
